An interest in politics was inadvertently inculcated in me by my Dad, when I was 11, during the 94 Assembly elections. The interest grew in me with age. I have been a constant observer since then. Looking back to 1994, politics has drastically changed. It has become a lucrative career for people with political background and an investment opportunity (investment is expense in elections) for some more.
One example that clearly illustrates the difference is, when NTR made his foray into politics in 1983, he had a mission, a motive to make a change, to make a difference and in fact he succeeded. The G.Os he has issued and the reforms he has made in Governance establish the fact. But when Chiranjeevi entered politics with the slogan ‘Saamaajika Nyaayam’, his motive was just power and money. He never meant what he said. His party’s merger into Indian National Congress proved it all. I do not mean to say that NTR did not make money, but I mean to say that, money was not his only motive.
It really surprises me to see the support or following that Jagan has from the elected representatives, MLA, MPs, his acolytes and the people. Are they oblivious of the fact that his father had misused his power to bestow inappropriate assets to his family? They are NOT. They are supporting just because they are hoping for new opportunities (opportunities of power and money). They are just taking a planned risk/investment. Shekhar Kammula’s movie ‘Leader’ has clearly narrated contemporary politics on screen and slapped the nation for choosing all these corrupt politicians.
A political party usually is attributed by an ideology, a vision, a policy etc. It is hard to find a political party in India with an ideology, but surely all of them have a vision, a vision for power and money. For me, now, a political party is JUST a group of individuals (or voters) supporting a single individual or leader (voter).
If you look at the proceedings of Andhra Pradesh assembly, off late there has never been, a healthy debate on any topic. The world’s largest democracy was heads down in shame, when elected representatives were caught red handed, watching porn videos in the assembly during the assembly proceedings. Can’t get any worse. A recent confession made by a military officer that he was bribed to buy low quality machinery, makes the future of the country scary.
The rise of so many new regional parties (none of them with an ideology) all across the country, with no party having sufficient majority to form a government, is a real threat to the nation’s integrity. This will add fuel to the fire to make things worse.
The experiment that Jayaprakash Narayan has made through LokSatta Party did not seem to have worked. I am sure he is not going to win the next election. This is because people/voter looks at things like ‘what is in it for me’ rather than ‘what is in it for us’.
My interest in politics grew like a sine curve (0-90 degrees) and looking at all this, it started receding (90 – 180 degrees). I feel like, should rather remain a political critic or even a silent spectator than being in corrupt, money driven politics.
